What: 4th annual Quiet Commotion Summit  (Revised Format)

The Quiet Commotion Summit, hosted by the Southern Rockies Conservation Alliance and co-sponsored by Audubon Colorado, will be a citizens’ summit bringing together traditional quiet recreationists such as hikers, skiers, mountain bikers, bird watchers, hunters and anglers, as well as national and local experts, to discuss with representatives of the Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management the recreation future of our Southern Rockies public lands.

The cost is $45 per person for registration. Lodging and meals must be arranged independently.

Keynote Speaker: Jim Furnish, former Deputy Chief of the U.S. Forest Service

When: May 4-6, 2007. Click here for a tentative schedule (Word doc).

Where: In beautiful Glenwood Springs, Colorado at the Historic Hotel Colorado nestled next to the Colorado River and surrounded by the White River National Forest.

Why: For the vast majority of Americans, public lands represent a place to get away from all the hustle and bustle of everyday life, to "recharge your batteries" so-to-speak and to experience the natural sights, sounds and smells of nature. Without strong and consistent advocacy for quiet places and agency staff willing to manage for these resource qualities, the backcountry will lose its remote character and future generations will not have the privilege of enjoying wild places. Wildlife, water, wilderness, and traditional human-powered recreation are all suffering due to unmanaged recreation and the encroachment of motors deeper and deeper into these once wild places. The Summit is designed to help all of us present to the land managers of the Forest Service (FS) and Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lands, the settings and desired experiences that are necessary to provide for quality experiences for all traditional quiet recreationists.

This year's citizens' summit will be focused on creating a dialogue with the FS and BLM which reaffirms that natural sights, sounds, and smells are valuable resources worth protecting for wildlife habitat as well as for recreational pursuits. Through sound science, recreation/resource management planning techniques, and public interest trends, participants will gain an understanding of the broad support for preserving quality places for the purpose of traditional quiet recreation and wildlife habitat protection. We wish to further strengthen our relationships and experiences of working effectively with federal land management staff so that it can lead to the protection and restoration of our treasured resources.
