Southern Rockies Ecosystem Project: Executive Director

Position Summary
SREP is a nonprofit conservation science organization working to protect, restore and connect ecosystems in the Southern Rockies of Colorado, Wyoming and New Mexico.

Job Location
The Executive Director will work out of our Denver office.

Reporting
The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors.

Requirements
The successful candidate will demonstrate competency in the following areas:

Responsibilities
The Executive Director is responsible for the daily management of the organization, including fundraising (50%), financial management, workplanning, staff supervision, and program oversight. The Executive Director is also responsible for working in close partnership with the Board of Directors in managing the financial health and overall direction of the organization.

I. Organizational Administration
The Executive Director will work with the Board of Directors to meet all legal and ethical obligations of the non-profit organization.

II. Fiscal and Staff Administration The Executive Director directs all fundraising activities, including grantwriting, major donor solicitation and special events. The Executive Director develops the annual budget, oversees all income and expenditures, monitors budget, and compiles internal and external fiscal reports that complies with audit expectations in accordance with accepted accounting procedures. The Executive Director is responsible for all fiscal, grant and board documentation and reporting requirements, including public education through annual organizational reports and other communication tools. The Executive Director is responsible for all administrative duties including staff and office management.

III. Board Communication and Development The Executive Director works in close partnership with the Board to manage the health and direction of the organization.

IV. Program Administration The Executive Director implements the strategic plan and associated program goals by establishing program priorities, identifying and acquiring resources, implementing programs, and reporting on and evaluating programs.

V. Communication The Executive Director represents SREP to the public. This includes making presentations at conferences, interacting with the media, developing solid relationships with key decision-makers such as politicians and agency heads, and overseeing outreach vehicles such as the website and newsletter. The Executive Director is responsible for managing our supporter data base, and working closely with organizational partners including other organizational members of the Southern Rockies Conservation Alliance (www.southernrockies.org).

Qualifications

  • Minimum BS/BA; MS/MA/JD much preferred.
  • Educational and/or professional background in conservation biology, land use/management, ecology or related fields.
  • Proven success as a fundraiser and manager.
  • Experience in program/organizational management, issue campaign development, and public relations.
  • Passion for wildlands protection.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills.

Wildlands Restoration Volunteers: Community Programs Director

Position Summary
Wildlands Restoration Volunteers (WRV) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with the mission to foster a community spirit of shared responsibility for the stewardship and restoration of public lands along the Northern Colorado Front Range, and beyond. WRV connects people with nature and promotes community-based involvement in the care of public lands. We engage volunteers in a wide variety of hands-on ecological restoration and other land stewardship activities. Through our restoration efforts and on-going "adopt-a-place" projects, volunteers see the positive impact they can have on our public lands and develop a deep love of the places they have helped to heal. As a force for empowering individuals to "make a difference," WRV offers volunteers dynamic and meaningful leadership opportunities and supports volunteers to realize their full potential as leaders. Wildlands Restoration Volunteers seeks a full-time Community Programs Director (CPD). The CPD oversees WRV’s programs to reach out to northern Colorado Front Range communities; establishes partnerships with community and government organizations; recruits and retain volunteers; and develops youth volunteerism.

Duties include: organizing events to strengthen the volunteer community; arranging and giving public presentations about WRV; developing WRV’s presence at outreach events; publishing a biannual newsletter and other outreach materials. The CPD also helps develop our volunteer leadership program; trains volunteer leaders; and provides support and leadership for some of our land stewardship projects. In addition, the CPD supervises the Administrative Assistant, and assists with fundraising and administrative tasks. WRV is a lean organization with a small staff. Everyone works together as a team, within a dynamic entrepreneurial work environment, pitching in where needed to meet organizational needs.

Salary

Wilderness Watch: Policy Director

Wilderness Watch, the nation's leading citizens' organization working for long-term protection for America's Wilderness, is seeking a highly motivated person to lead our Wilderness defense and policy development program.  Wilderness Watch is based in Missoula, Montana.

Responsibilities:
The policy director is responsible for carrying out the issue analysis and policy development work of Wilderness Watch. This includes preparing comments on NEPA documents, filing administrative appeals, assisting with litigation research and strategy, and developing positions on matters affecting the National Wilderness Preservation System.

The Policy Director works with Wilderness Watch members, other conservationists, government agencies, and Congress to build support for actions that protect and preserve Wilderness and Wild Rivers.  The policy director develops educational tools; trains and supervises volunteers and interns; works with local and national media; represents Wilderness Watch at meetings and conferences; and writes articles for the organization's newsletter and on-line listserv.

Qualifications:
Demonstrated experience in public land issues and policy analyses, with an understanding of the Wilderness Act and NEPA very desirable.

Excellent writing and public speaking skills.

Experience working (or volunteering) in the conservation movement is desirable.

Experience working with the media.

Able to effectively handle multiple projects and deadlines, self-directed, and detail-oriented.

Able to work effectively as a member of our team.

Western Resource Advocates: Staff Attorney

Western Resource Advocates (WRA) in Boulder seeks an experienced attorney for litigation and policy position with Lands Program.

Geographical scope encompasses the Rocky Mountain West and Washington, D.C. Work includes challenging oil and gas development, including oil shale and other unconventional fuels; protecting special landscapes and wildlife habitat; safeguarding clean air and water; and partnering with other WRA programs to promote energy solutions grounded in efficiency, renewables, and conservation.

The successful candidate will have the following qualifications:

  • Excellent writing skills
  • Minimum two years litigation experience
  • Knowledge of public lands, environmental, and/or energy law

Colorado Environmental Coalition: West Slope Field Organizer

Organizational Background
Founded in 1965, Colorado Environmental Coalition is one of the state’s preeminent conservation organizations. CEC serves as the grassroots-organizing arm of Colorado's conservation community with offices in Denver, Grand Junction, and Craig working to win on priority issues and campaigns. CEC takes a leadership role in convening its 95 partner organizations and other allies, to identify, prioritize, and select critical issues on which to focus, then organizes and mobilizes around these issues, and designs and implements successful campaigns to achieve policy wins on them.

Position Summary
The Field Organizer in the Grand Junction office plays a lead role in organizing citizens and coalition partners on regional energy issues and wilderness campaigns. Reporting to the West Slope Field Director, this position works closely with other field staff, the coalition of conservation groups in Colorado, and local activists to implement CEC’s campaign and project goals. The major focus will be continuing to build public support for the protection of wilderness quality lands on the western slope, educating the public on energy issues, building diverse ally support for specific goals, and taking a lead on Clean Energy initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Help devise and implement organizing strategies to achieve CEC campaign and project goals.
  • Educate and build public support for and landscape protection and responsible energy development in Western Colorado.
  • Effectively articulate land policy and energy issues to the public.
  • Organize wilderness support for CEC campaign and project goals from a diversity of interests, including ranchers, outfitters, hunters, Grand Junction area organizations and activists.
  • Secure support for wilderness and responsible resource protection from local and congressional elected officials.
  • Coordinate effective media outreach on energy issues and wilderness.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 1+ years experience or related experience with coordinating grassroots campaigns, community, and/or political field organizing.
  • Knowledge of the local issues distinct to the Western Slope of Colorado
  • Demonstrated ability/willingness to live and work in Grand Junction, Colorado.
  • Awareness of land management and energy policy in Western Colorado.
  • Ability to recruit, manage and mobilize volunteers and citizens to take effective action.
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to work independently with minimal day to day supervision.
  • Experience with event planning, leading wilderness hikes, and trail maintenance.
  • Skilled at working effectively with a diversity of people and constituencies

Have own vehicle with valid Colorado Driver’s License, registration, and insurance that can reliably travel throughout Colorado, sometimes on short notice. Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends as needed.

Physical Demands
The Field Organizer regularly uses a computer/phone, walks, hikes, bends, and climbs stairs. Must be able to maneuver, lift and carry event materials, packages, and supplies up to 25 pounds. Offices and buildings are totally smoke-free.

Compensation and Benefits
$28,000-$32,000, plus excellent health/dental benefits, 403(b) with match, vacation, sick and sabbatical program.

Colorado Mountain Club: Recreation Planning Coordinator

Organizational Background: 
The Colorado Mountain Club (CMC) is one of the oldest and largest outdoor clubs in the nation.  Founded in 1912, the CMC is organized to unite those who cherish, study, and explore the Rocky Mountains, stimulate public interest in the mountains, collect and disseminate information about the mountains on behalf of literature, art, recreation, and science, and protect the ecosystems and landscapes of the Rocky Mountains.  The CMC serves a membership of over 8,000, and has a long history in conservation, focusing on protecting the habitats and wildness of the Southern Rockies ecosystem.

Position Summary: 
The Recreation Planning Coordinator will be based out of Golden, Colorado, working directly with the Assistant Director of Conservation.  The Recreation Planning Coordinator will be responsible for supporting the CMC’s work to protect quiet, human-powered use on public lands throughout Colorado, and to minimize the impacts of recreation on the landscape.  This position will involve responding to travel and recreation management planning processes, coordinating with allied recreation and conservation organizations throughout Colorado to build our quiet use network, and working with CMC members to engage them in recreation planning.  The Recreation Planning Coordinator will also assist with roadless protection and wilderness efforts throughout the state, and provide general support to the Conservation Department.

Responsibilities:

  • Communicate travel and recreation management priorities to the CMC membership, as well as other recreation and conservation organizations throughout the state. 
  • Build and enhance Colorado’s quiet use network.
  • Respond directly to travel management/recreation planning processes throughout the state, engaging CMC members and advocating for traditional recreational opportunities and land protection.  
  • Organize volunteer stewardship projects, helping land management agencies to implement travel planning decisions on-the-ground.
  • Provide website and newsletter support, increase the Conservation Department’s communication capacity.
  • Provide support for statewide roadless campaign and CMC priority wilderness campaigns.
  • Assist with the coordination of conferences and events related to CMC’s campaigns, represent CMC’s Conservation Department and our issues in public venues.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Relevant college degree with organizing/coordination experience in fields of public land management and planning.  At least 1 year experience is preferred.
  • Good organizational skills and ability to effectively reach out to traditional and diverse allies
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently, with minimal supervision.
  • Knowledge of conservation and recreation issues on western public lands.
  • Superior organizational and communication skills, as well as good computer skills.  Experience working with websites preferred. 
  • Personal interest in human-powered recreational activities and a strong conservation ethic.

Colorado Environmental Coalition: Global Warming Organizer/Fellowship

Position Summary:
This is a one-year fellowship position. The Global Warming Fellow will play a lead role in managing campaigns and organizing citizens and partners on regional and state clean energy and global warming issues. Reporting to the Front Range Field Director in the Denver office, this position works closely with other field staff, coalition partners, and local activists to implement CEC’s campaign and project goals. A major focus will be to build public support for the Colorado “Go Solar” campaign. This campaign will help make solar energy more affordable and accessible to all Coloradans, create positive momentum around a clean energy economy, address the issue of global warming, and provide an alternative to increased drilling of Colorado’s special places. The fellow will educate the public, build diverse ally support for specific goals, and conduct outreach to elected officials, civic organizations, and others.

Responsibilities:

  • Advocate for state legislative priorities on clean energy and global warming.
  • Educate and build public support for clean energy policy, including the Colorado “Go Solar” initiative, a statewide bond that would provide loans to localities to invest in clean energy systems on behalf of their consumers, allowing individual consumers who participate to pay back this investment over time.
  • Help devise and implement organizing strategies to achieve CEC campaign and project goals.
  • Coordinate and manage a coalition of groups dedicated to achieving clean energy solutions to global warming.
  • Organize support for CEC campaign and project goals from a diversity of interests, including citizens, sportsmen, and clean energy business community and local governments across the state.
  • Assist with West Slope efforts, such as public presentations and major press events.
  • Coordinate effective media outreach on clean energy and global warming issues.
  • Serve as a liaison with members of the administration and state legislature on these issues.

  • 2+ years experience or related experience with coordinating grassroots campaigns, community and/or political field organizing.
